This award – which has been given just nine times in LeadingAge Minnesota’s history prior to this year – recognizes outgoing visionary leaders in the senior care services sector. The award honors individuals who have had a major impact on older adult services in Minnesota. It is presented to leaders who have inspired others and contributed to the formation, goals, governance, and initiatives of LeadingAge Minnesota.

A fitting tribute

The award announcement from LeadingAge Minnesota states, “It’s hard to overstate the impact [Dan] has had on PHS and the wider senior care services field. Under his leadership, PHS has grown from one location serving 200 older adults to more than 60 locations serving more than 27,000 older adults, making them the fourth-largest nonprofit provider of senior housing and services in the U.S.

“The hallmark of Dan’s pioneering leadership has been not only his sharp business acumen and a deep commitment to the mission of PHS, but a humility that drove him to prioritize the good of others above himself.” (AdvantAGE newsletter, September 20, 2024)

One colleague commented, “Dan never made us feel that we were ‘not in his league’, even though we all knew that he was the smartest, hardest working, kindest senior care professional any of us ever met. Dan embodies so many of our values here at LeadingAge Minnesota. As I reflect on his legacy, his unwavering commitment and trustworthiness really stand out to me. Talk to anyone who has worked with Dan, and you will immediately understand the kind of leader he is. He puts others before himself, and leads with kindness, grace, and humility. He’s shaped our field in profound ways. Minnesota’s older adult population will continue to benefit from Dan’s leadership and impact for years to come.”

Honoring two extraordinary leaders

Along with Dan, the award was presented to Jon Lundberg, recently retired president and CEO of Ebenezer Senior Living. Dan, who is set to retire in 2025, has been with PHS since 1976 and was named president and CEO in 1997.  Both Dan and Jon also have been granted honorary lifetime membership with LeadingAge Minnesota.

Congratulations, Dan. Well deserved!
