Spotlight on our StandUP practice

This week in our Better Together series, we celebrate StandUP – a simple, daily practice that is making us better together.

Our habit of gathering daily for StandUP means that, quite literally, we are responding to God’s command to “rise up in the presence of the aged.”

For 10 to 15 minutes each day, we “stand up” and meet in small groups to remind ourselves why we’re here: to enrich the lives of older adults. We share updates and seek the support of one another and of God. Now we can enter our day as a Ready & Engaged People, a core value.

‘StandUP…is a gift’

Resident Assistant Vera Davis from Lake Minnetonka Shores reflects, “I love the blessing of StandUP because I hear about important things I need to do for my residents.”

Moreover, Vera shares about the personal impact of StandUP. “Prayers and StandUP were so helpful when I first started working,” she says. “I had a hard time when a resident died. I was so close to them I didn’t know what to do with my heartache. StandUP and the Lord’s word being spoken over us is a gift.”

‘Bunny holes’ lead to fun conversation

Of course, StandUP can also be light-hearted and fun! For example, the environmental services team at Johanna Shores adds conversation starters — or what they call “bunny holes.” 😊

Sam Amarteifo, a maintenance technician, exclaims, “Every day we do the bunny hole!” Laughter erupts. “Sometimes we have two bunny holes!” adds Tim Coenen, environmental services director. Curt Cain, lead engineer, then joins in: “The pre-bunny hole and the post-bunny hole!”

On that particular day, Tim read the “bunny hole”: “If you’re moving to another country and could only pack one carryon bag, what would you pack?”

Answers ranged from phones to fishing rods, reels and rifles to sunglasses … each answer giving a peek inside their lives and personalities. Perhaps leading to future conversations while making repairs!

Knowing and being known

Essentially, StandUP helps us not only know better the residents we serve, but also those who serve alongside us.

Sam continues, now speaking directly to a first-time visiting staff member: “If it weren’t for StandUP, I wouldn’t know you. But because of StandUP I know your name. So, the next time I see you, I will call you by your name.”

And that’s how StandUP also helps us “rise up” and greet one another with reverence while we continue forth to enrich the lives of older adults.

Presbyterian Homes & Services adopted the practice of StandUP based on The Ritz-Carlton company’s daily meeting called “Line-Up.” We took this award-winning model and tailored it to fit our non-profit and faith-based ministry. Although some things have changed since we established this practice nearly 20 years ago, StandUP allows us to connect with one another in a real way, every day.
