Admitting we need help with daily living is hard. We’re reluctant to see this admission as the first step to taking us – and maybe our whole family – from surviving to thriving.

But the benefits of assisted living can be amazing.

“The level of ease has just been noticeable,” says Michelle, daughter of Larry and Mary, who live at Marvella in St. Paul, Minn.

“We all have the comfort of knowing that 24/7 if anything were to come up, it’s not all on our mom to be worrying about, and it’s not on my dad to then worry that she’s worrying,” she adds.

Reaching this level of ease, however, required the whole family to make some difficult decisions, balancing the needs of all concerned.

At first, Larry and his energetic wife, Mary, had moved into an independent living apartment, excited to escape the burdensome maintenance of their larger home.

When Larry’s needs changed, Michelle began to worry that her very sociable mother, Mary, would feel tied to the apartment out of concern for Larry and unable to take advantage of all of the activities. “I mean I can’t keep up with her,” she smiles.

Marvella offered a flexible living arrangement, allowing the couple to stay together while receiving the care they needed. So, when Larry needed more support to live his best life, he moved to an assisted living apartment staffed with 24/7 support. Mary stayed in the original apartment and now they can share the same amenity-rich environment while receiving the individualized support each needs to live and thrive.

Mary says, “I feel at home here. … We’re glad we’re here. We just feel so good about Marvella.”
