Christian ministry
Christian Ministry is the first of our values for a reason.
It is at the heart of all we do and forms the cornerstone of our identity as an organization. Through our value of Christian Ministry, we strive to reflect the love of God and define our service to you and others as an expression of God’s grace.
In 1955, the founders of Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) established the biblical foundation upon which our ministry and mission are based. Today, we hold firm to our foundational verses to guide us and provide the theological framework for our ministry.
Select Biblical framework verses
Jesus demonstrated for us a holy and God-inspired calling to meet the needs of older adults.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
We revere and honor God through our vocation and service.
Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.
We demonstrate God’s love in everything we do.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
We have a responsibility to offer the gifts we have to serve others.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
Mission-based relationships
With deep roots and strong connections, PHS benefits from relationships that sustain our Christian ministry.
The trust of families earned over generations
Since 1955, Presbyterian Homes & Services has been blessed to serve older adults and their families. Though PHS has grown and changed considerably over the years, we remain faithful to our original call: to honor God by enriching the lives and touching the hearts of older adults. This keeps you and your loved ones at the center of all we do.
Biblical framework
In 1955, the founders established a biblical framework to shape its ministry and mission. Even though leaders have updated it over time, the commitment to enriching lives and touching the hearts of older adults remains constant.
Our Christian values guide us to provide top-notch care to those in need, fostering a tight-knit community based on faith. Whether you’re part of our team, a resident, family member, volunteer, donor, or partner, you’ll find support and care, both emotionally and spiritually. These principles also ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in our service to you.

Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. Teach them his decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.”
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented them to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to one hope when you were called — one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to people.”
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.
