Beyond doubt

Light for the Way devotional seriesHave you ever experienced a season of doubting? Maybe you questioned whether to believe what your parents, family or friends believed. Thankfully, my dad listened to my doubts about God and the church and helped me through that time in life. Perhaps recently you questioned why God allowed suffering in your life or a loved one’s life. Maybe you asked, “Does God know or care about me?”

Doubting brings spiritual and emotional pain. Some people deal with it by leaving the faith.

In the Bible, the Apostle Thomas doubted but found his way through the deep despair and disillusionment over Jesus’ death. Thomas was not with the other disciples on Resurrection evening when Jesus first appeared to them after His crucifixion. We are not told why Thomas was missing.

The other disciples told Thomas the news, “We have seen the Lord!” They recounted seeing Jesus alive. Thomas had to be certain, so he gave the ultimatum. “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (John 20:24-29, NIV).

Thomas shows us it is good to seek the truth. Doubts and questions can lead to stronger faith. Jesus gave Thomas what he needed to believe — the proof of his nail-pierced hands and his spear-pierced side. Thomas responded with a ‘light-bulb’ moment of understanding — My Lord and My God.” He was convinced, and his faith became very real and personal.

Thomas gives hope for doubters. Need help with doubts? Your campus pastor is here to listen!
