The Historic Village at Boutwells Landing

Reminiscent of the small town square, the Historic Village connects you to Boutwells Landing, its local history and its namesake, Rev. William T. Boutwell, a Presbyterian missionary, pastor and key figure in the early history of Minnesota. The Historic Village is a place for you and neighbors to gather for social events, outdoor concerts and other occasions and is open to the surrounding communities of Washington County. All structures in the Historic Village are accessible.

McKean School

Named after Elias McKean, a Stillwater city founder and member of its first school board, the authentic one-room schoolhouse opened at Boutwells Landing in 2009. Originally built in 1864, the schoolhouse was restored by volunteers to its original condition and appearance, furnished authentically to the period. Programs include a week-long summer school session for grade-school age.  Boutwells residents and volunteers invite children to experience daily life as pupils in a one-room schoolhouse.

McKean School Summer Program – Experience a day in the life of a child from the early 1900’s. Enjoy a time of study and play including everything from lessons in nature conservation and energy to games and activities from the period. Open to students entering grades 2 through 8.

Enjoy live music on a warm summer evening, or simply sit quietly while on a stroll across the campus. The Victorian-style gazebo, situated in the center of the Village Green, is the perfect spot for folks of all ages to gather for scheduled entertainment and social events, informal get-togethers and casual conversation. With the schoolhouse and historic church on either side, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Historic Church

Step inside the scale replica of old First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater to be reminded of the important faith-based roots of Boutwells Landing. The exterior design and interior embellishments of the Historic Church capture the original design of the church established by Rev. Boutwell who led the establishment of the First Presbyterian Church congregation and the 1857 construction of the original church building in old downtown Stillwater.  The Historic Church was dedicated in the summer of 2017.
